Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of this site.

This site is best viewed with your browser maximized and your display resolution set to 800x600 pixels. If your browser is not maximized at that resolution, or if the resolution is set lower than that, many images will exceed what can fit in the available screen space. If the resolution is set much higher, some images may appear too small. The issue of how well images fit may be further complicated by the presence of toolbars along any edges of the display, or within the browser. Unless you’re going to be spending a lot of time browsing this site, it won’t be worth changing your display resolution, so if you don’t know how, don’t worry; there are easier things you can do that might help.

If your browser supports frames, you can see that there is a separate column along the right side of your display showing a list of animal species, and a box in the upper right part of your display showing a few menu options. On this site, you can resize the frames in case the photos aren’t quite fitting into the main frame (this one).

One adverse consequence of using frames is the loss of the specific addresses of the pages being displayed in the frames. This is inconvenient if you want to bookmark a particular photo, or mail the link for a particular photo to a friend. The button to the upper left of each photo takes care of this problem.

The general idea behind the layout of this site is that you can view photos of bird species of your choice by clicking on the names in the list on the right side. If you don’t care about particular species, click on the button in the upper right frame for a selection of several images of the selected region. To select a different region, use the button.

Another issue related to pixel display resolution AND to monitor size is the size of the print that you're reading. If it's too large or small for you, you might be able to change it through your browser.

Many of the species are illustrated by more than one photo. These cases may not be obvious. If there’s a button to the upper right of the photo, just press it to see the next photo. If there’s a button, press it to backtrack.

The list on the right can be displayed in taxonomic order or alphabetical order. If you aren’t used to taxonomic ordering, you’d probably be better off switching to alphabetic ordering (the link is in the upper right corner).

The photos on this site are stored as low-resolution JPEG files. While this results in substantial loss of data (i.e., quality) from the original photo and scan, it ensures fast download times, a big concern if you're using a slow dial-up modem connection.
